SUPPLEMENT CATEGORIES EXPLAINED: HOW TO EVALUATE WHAT YOU’RE TAKING

SUPPLEMENT DECISION FRAMEWORK

A Simple Way to Understand What You Actually Need

Researched and organized by Joshua Roiland, BS, CSCS, FNS

INTRODUCTION

Supplements are not one category—they are different tools with different levels of evidence, regulation, and purpose.

Most confusion comes from skipping the most important step:

Understanding what type of supplement you are actually looking at before deciding if you need it.

This guide breaks supplements into four clear categories so you can make safer, more informed decisions.

HOW TO USE THIS

Do not start by picking a product.

Start by identifying the category that matches your goal:

  1. Evidence-based foundation  (Kreider), (VanDusseldorp), (Park)

  2. Clinical / deficiency correction (Amjera)

  3. Organic / wellness-focused  (USDA)

  4. Performance blends (Saldanha), (Vibrant Health)

Each category answers a different type of question.

1. FOUNDATIONAL EVIDENCE-BASED SUPPLEMENTS

WHAT THIS IS

These are simple-ingredient (sometimes single-ingredient) supplements with the strongest scientific support and most consistent results across populations.

Examples:

WHY IT MATTERS

These are the baseline tools of supplementation.

They are:

KEY IDEA

If you are unsure where to start, this category is the reference point for everything else.

2. CLINICAL / MEDICAL-GRADE SUPPLEMENTS

WHAT THIS IS

Supplements used to correct or address identified deficiencies or clinical needs, often guided by bloodwork or healthcare professionals. There are even resources that can help determine if your current medications are possibly causing problems due to interactions in your body! You may actually benefit from STOPPING a supplement that is inappropriate for your current health, and medical status (as I have in the past. Drug interactions with supplements are not fun)

Examples:

KEY IDEA

These are not performance supplements.

They are corrective tools used when the body shows a specific need(Amjera)

3. ORGANIC / WELLNESS SUPPLEMENTS

WHAT THIS IS

Supplements focused on sourcing, farming standards, and reduced synthetic processing.

Often certified organic or “clean label.”

KEY IDEA

Organic standards regulate how ingredients are produced, not how effective they are for performance.(USDA)

These are best for:

There will be a future article about MY personal experience with Organic/ Wellness supplements

These may be best for this type of person: sourcing-conscious consumers

4. PROPRIETARY BLEND / PERFORMANCE SUPPLEMENTS

WHAT THIS IS

Multi-ingredient formulas where ingredients are listed, but exact dosages are partially hidden.

Common in:

KEY IDEA

Quality varies widely.

Some are highly engineered, others are underdosed marketing products.(Saldanha), (Vibrant Health)

The difference comes down to:

  • company credibility

  • testing standards

  • dosing transparency

  • manufacturing quality (cGMP, third-party testing)

SIMPLE DECISION RULE

Instead of asking:

“What supplement should I take?”

Ask in order:

  1. Do I need foundational support first? (evidence-based) (Kreider) (VanDusseldorp) (Park)

  2. Do I have a clinical deficiency? (Amjera)

  3. Do I care most about sourcing and wellness? (USDA)

  4. Am I choosing a performance blend knowingly? (Vibrant Health), (Saldanha)

IMPORTANT CONTEXT

All supplements should be viewed through the lens of:

Supplements support physiology—they do not replace it.
